APR Adjustable Short Shifter
APR is pleased to present the ultimate fully adjustable Short Shifter System for the 6 speed manual transmission!
Overview

The APR Short Shifter System is a comprehensive upgrade to the factory gear shifter assembly and is designed to reduce shifter movement, in all directions, while simultaneously improving shift quality. The system provides fine tuning of front-to-back and side-to-side movements to shorten shifts, counterweight adjustments for enhanced shift quality, and upgrades the weak points of the factory setup to provide years worry free use. The upgrade is simple, easy to install, easy to adjust, and leaves the driver spending less time shifting, and more time accelerating to victory. To APR’s engineers, it’s the ultimate solution, but to the driver, it just works!
Quick Facts
- Fully adjustable front-to-back movement
A slotted adjustment track on the shifter lever allows for precise adjustment of the shifter’s forward and backwards travel distance. - Fully adjustable side-to-side movement
A slotted adjustment track on the relay lever allows for precise adjustment of the shifter’s side to side travel distance. - Adjustable counterweights
Three stackable counterweights allow the driver to change the overall feel of the system to his or her own preference liking. - Stainless steel spline insert
The unique interlocking stainless steel insert prevents the input spline from wearing out over time. On cast and billet aluminum systems, wear of this part is common, which leads to sloppy shifts, component failure and potentially damage to the transmission. - Billet relay lever
The CNC-machined, thick billet aluminum relay lever is responsible for side-to-side movement and adjustment. This piece replaces the thin, flexible, stamped metal or plastic factory pieces. - Billet shift lever
The CNC-machined, thick billet aluminum shifter lever is responsible for front-to-back movement and adjustment. This component houses the counterbalance weights and replaces the factory cast, spline-wear-prone, piece. - Easy to adjust
Adjustment is as simple as loosening and tightening the pegs or adding more weights. No disassembly required! - Easy to install
The system mimics the factory shape making install simple and relatively easy. - All necessary hardware
The system includes new friction material, clips, locking nuts and stainless steel bolts and pegs. It’s a complete upgrade and complements the APR Shifter Cable Bracket.

Application Guide
The APR Adjustable Short Shifter system is sold as a complete system, or both pieces can be purchased separately. The system is designed to work with transverse 6 speed manual transmissions, commonly designated as the MQ350, O2M or O2Q. These transmission are found on nearly all MK5, MK6 and MK7 platform Golf/GTI/R/Clubsport/Jetta/GLI, MK2/MK3 A3/S3/TT, Octavia, Leon, Cupra, Scirocco and similar vehicles equipped with the the 1.8T, 2.0T, 2.0 TDI and 3.2L VR6 engines.

APR Adjustable Short Shifter (6-speed)
After sitting on the fence for ages about which short shifter to go with, I finally decided to go for the APR full kit ( 2019 Golf R). I had narrowed down my choices to this, or the Dieselgeek Sigma 6, which seems to have a lot of happy users. My biggest concern, though, was the number of DG reviewers who said it felt too short and "mechanical" for their liking. I realize feel is always incredibly subjective, but as the car is a daily driver, I had concerns about having something that felt like overkill, and too much "race car" for the street. I've had cars with aftermarket shifters that were very solid and mechanical, which was nice for aggressive driving, but could become a bit tedious for around town driving. I decided to take a chance and go with the APR even though there seem to be limited online reviews, and after a few days of driving, I'm happy to say it was the perfect choice in the end. Having tried a DG (albeit with full bushings and superpin), it was definitely mechanical and precise, but too notchy and "tight" for my liking. The APR feels as though it's reduced throw length about 30ish percent, so just at the limit of what I hoped for. Because the side to side length is also adjustable on this kit, I feel like there is enough distance so that I won't risk accidentally shifting into the wrong gear if I'm not laser focused at all times. There's significantly less play in the shifter now than there was, but there's still a little movement, which again feels nice for me on a daily driver that's driven in a spirited way. All in all, I'm really pleased I decided to be one of the rare ones who decided to go the APR route, and I highly recommend this kit. It's exactly what I'd been hoping for. Quality is absolutely top-notch too!

APR Adjustable Short Shifter (6-speed)
Just got the full kit installed after sitting on the fence for ages and reading what felt like every short shifter review. For me, it came down to either the Dieselgeek Sigma 6, which everyone seems to have, or be the outlier and go for the APR kit. Like so many others, I wanted that ideal mix of added precision and shorter throw, but to retain an OEM feel. I’m happy to say that after a lot of indecision, I’m in love with how this kit feels. It’s of course shorter than stock (maybe 30ish percent) and definitely more precise and mechanical. It allows you to adjust not only the throw, but also side to side, which was important to me as I didn’t want the gates to feel super close, requiring laser focus on shifting all the time. But what I truly appreciate is the fact it’s not “overly” mechanical in terms of feel. I’ve had various aftermarket shifters on other cars that have been too notchy for a daily driven/street car. Of course, this is very subjective, but it seems there are a lot of reviews online from people who feel the same. I’m happy to say that this feels pretty much ideal in terms of what I wanted. The car is an absolute joy to drive and shift, all over again. Hopefully this review helps anyone who’s still on the fence struggling with the same concerns. VERY satisfied!
